A weekend on the Kenai River

Back in early May, Courtney organized a weekend trip to Drifter’s Lodge. This was a flashback to many, many trips he has organized to “the Lodge” over the years, but which have become increasingly rarer for any number of reasons. It was nice to relive a bit of those memories.

This time we were accompanied by other families with young kids, including the Ghos, Altmans, Hansons and Janjuas. A trip to the lodge with lots of munchkins has a different flavor! Fun! Most of the attendees joined us on a gentle rafting trip down the Kenai River, kids included. We did hit one good wave and those of us in front got a good drenching, but most of the trip was a scenic float.

Tallis did NOT have fun on that rafting trip! He was cold and had no love for the constricting life jacket.

After a long bout of crying, I felt so bad for him that I snuck open my life jacket and let him nurse. Warm milk and a cuddly mom was just what he needed to fall asleep and relax. Poor kid.

All the other kids seemed to get into the rafting groove, either by napping right away or enjoying the trip. The group consisted of the Janjuas with Rinaldo, us with Tallis, the Hansons with Toby, and Matt Gho with Marina. And, of course, our guide Ty.

Everyone but the Janjuas and we departed on Saturday afternoon, but the 6 of us stayed on for a second night. We had a delicious barbequed dinner by the fire above the river and a casual evening of good company.

As I recall, several months later, we were all pretty pooped and called it an early night before taking off our separate ways in the morning, but it felt so nice to have spent a much-loved weekend in Cooper Landing. Yay for Drifter’s Lodge!
