Winter Hiking

Since my back and hips don't do too well on uneven surfaces (e.g. deep snow) during pregnancy, I'm not much of a winter hiking companion lately. But I do get to take Tallis out near the cabin on occasion and Courtney and Tallis go on longer jaunts with decent frequency. There's a big snow pile at the end of the parking lot that he likes to play on, an unofficial sledding hill right next to the house, and the short overlook trail right next to the cabin, all frequent destinations for close-by winter excursions. Getting outside does all of us good, especially Tallis!

I did make it as far as Powerline Pass back in early December (a loop of just less than a mile), and we actually remembered to bring the camera. It was such an invigorating little hike, freeing us up from he claustrophobic feeling of winter and the burden of park hosting duties. Tallis got to go in style, bundled up on the sled. The trail starts right behind the house. (What a convenience - wish I could use it more!)

The day was beautiful and we enjoyed a casual time enjoying the quiet view and the snow, finally recreating together as a family out in the park we work so hard to take care of!

And yes, we are aware that the snowman suit we bought for Tallis last year looks a little funny on a toddler, though it was cute on an infant/crawler! We have since upgraded, and Tallis and we are much happier with his snow clothes!

He LOVES his adorable hat, and sometimes won't take it off when he wears it to someone else's house. It, the mittens, and a fleece suit under the outerwear were all gifts from Mely and Grandpa Larsen at Thanksgiving. Thank you!

And just because it's cute, I will document here that Tallis also loves to wear Mama's hats and ear-warmers.

Just today Courtney and Tallis went to Powerline again while I worked at a local high school. Denali and the Alaska Range were quite the sight to behold.

Tallis did a lot of walking instead of sled-riding today. He's really quite independent and now quite skilled, too, with his locomotion.

We're glad that Powerline Pass is an easy and satisfying destination for a sled ride with Tallis!
