While I'm at it, I'll make sure you know the other son is 5 ...

... as of July 31, 2013.

Pleased with this cake, too, although the carving credit goes all to my friend Laura.

It was a hot day, even for Alaska, and the poor cake was sweating profusely. It's not easy being made of shortening and food coloring.

Custom-made mini pizzas were a big hit. Isn't that deck step awesome for group picnics?

Fiesta!

Tallis' big present was his own 2-wheeled bike. There's a bit of a learning curve there, but he pulled it off!

Grandpa Hess helped him catch a fish a couple weeks later.

And, as is often the case, being 5 means going to kindergarten.

Tallis is the only kindergartener in the Cooper Landing K-12 school. There are 14 students enrolled, total. It's actually a good way to go, in many ways. Disadvantages in others, but it all balances out. How many kids in this age can say they went to school in a one-room schoolhouse? (Although this one has two rooms, and we just managed to hire a second teacher!)

Tallis loves being five! He feels all grown up.
