In all truth, it has been a magnificent winter to spend at 2200 feet elevation above Anchorage, Alaska. It seems that most of the winter there was an inversion, very much in our favor, resulting in gray, cold, foggy, miserable weather in town and glorious, sunny, breathtaking weather up here at Glen Alps. Aaaahhh .... But once March rolled around that started to change. That month certainly came in like a lion, and hasn't changed since ....
First, it was the 90-mile-per-hour winds and the subsequent white-out blizzard conditions. Then it was the 30 inches of snowfall and monster drifts! Courtney has been an amazing snowblower operator all winter, but for this storm he had to really outdo himself! These photos show him in the middle of said monster storm: he blew about 6 inches the night before, woke up to another 19 to blow the next morning, and then another 5 or so fell that afternoon. Wowzers!
Without his hard work, we would've been stuck in the house for a LONG time. Even with his amazing snow throwing, we still felt nearly stranded beneath some major accumulation. This was the entrance to our garage.
The big snowfall did bring some fun, though. The snowmachining area was finally opened for a few days, and Courtney got to go out with the ranger to mark trails, etc. He'd been aching to get out like that all winter - yay!
Tallis even got a ride around the mile loop to Powerline and back. He though that was pretty cool, though it was naptime and he looked a little dazed.
So yes, winter has had its ups and downs. Because of my pregnancy I didn't get to take much advantage of the outdoor winter activities, but the little we did get has been very nice. Courtney did some cross country skiing while Tallis and I were in Virginia in January, and loved it. Regardless, we are now ready for winter to break. Seriously, snow EVERY DAY in April? Come on!
