When Tallis kicks his blankets off, which he sometimes does, he ends up sleeping curled up like the above photo. To stay warm, I’m guessing. That’s why he usually gets zipped into a wearable blanket at bed time. I sleep better that way, too, because I don’t wake up as much to check on him and his blanket coverage. Also noted in this photo is the fact that Tallis almost always sleeps with Winnie the Pooh and his water bottle. Winnie and Tallis have a good thing going and we’ve made up many silly stories to explain their relationship. When he throws Winnie out of the crib, it’s to go get reinforcements for the escape attempt they are plotting. (They haven’t succeeded yet.) Sometimes, because Winnie has a jingle bell sewn into him, the throwing out is Tallis’ way of setting booby traps for his parents when we walk by in the night and trip over him. Tallis often lies in bed for an extended period before falling asleep, talking to Winnie and filling him in on the adventures of his day. Lately, he gives Winnie lots of hugs and snuggles and we lay him down for the night. He knows Winnie anywhere – when other kids have a Winnie among their play things, he makes a bee line for him. But, lest ye think for a moment that Winnie is Tallis’ favorite lovey, do not be deceived! That title belongs solely to his yellow blanket:
The yellow blanket is in its second generation of lovey-ness – it also belonged to Courtney when he was Tallis’ age. How it survived, I dare not guess. It rarely gets ejected from the crib, rarely gets kicked off in the night, and has started to be a nearly permanent fixture apart from sleeping times as well. (Update since I wrote this several weeks ago - he has learned that when he doesn't want to go to sleep, he can throw his yellow blanket out of the crib, then he cries desparately to have it back, and we feel so bad for him that we invariably come in and return the blanket to him, at which point he often looks so cute and lonely that we take him out and delay naptime until a later moment. Hmmm....) When he takes it to church or the store, many others comment that they had a blanket just like that when they were little, or their grown son had a blanket like that when he was a baby, and WHERE did we get it? It’s a classic, apparently. Whatever its history, it’s Tallis’ now.
Another inheritance Tallis has from his father is his tendency toward impressive bed head. He’s got a long way to go to break Courtney’s records though.
The above photo doesn’t quite capture Tallis’ ‘do, so here’s another from early in the summer:
