Independence Day Hike

For the 4th of July we took a drive down to the Portage Valley to do a simple hike up the Byron Glacier valley. We began with gorgeous July weather and foliage in full action.

Within only a mile or less of hiking, the leaves were just barely unfurling on the alder trees. Suddenly it was May or early June again.

Our trail soon crossed an old avalanche chute and we felt like it was March again.

The end of the valley was still locked in pure winter. What a difference a mile-long, easy trail can make!

Some day we will learn that when the weather is nice we need to go hiking in places where we can enjoy it! This seems to be a recurring theme with us. Luckily we hit it right some times!
