Bird Point

Fellow park volunteers and friends, Jeff and Patty, lived at the Bird Point cabin on Turnagain Arm, about 15–20 miles south of McHugh, for the summer. We stopped by a few times during the season. Early in the summer I got a nice shot of Tallis waiting for the bore tide to pass.

Bird Point is just that, a point of rock that extends far into the Arm. People converge on the developed overlook to watch big bore tides, but if you really want to see a bore tide, don’t go there! You’re too far away from the action. Get up close on one of the highway pull-outs south of Bird Point instead. The developed overlook is a beautiful place to get an Alaskan vista, though.

Late in the summer, as Jeff and Patty were packing up to leave for Minnesota, they took us to the less developed areas of the Point. We hiked along the railroad tracks for a while, before taking a turn to go to the end of one of the rocky outcroppings.

The end of the Point, at reasonably low tides, has large expanses of mud flats. We let Tallis have a heyday getting dirty while we watched harbor seals in the water nearby and Beluga Whales near the opposite coast.

When we arrived back to the cabin, Tallis was worn out! But we took advantage of a chance to get a photo of him and Kenya together, Kenya being Jeff and Patty’s black lab. Tallis LOVES dogs, and Kenya was a constant fascination during the summer. We have no intentions of getting a dog ourselves, but with responsible friends who own mellow dogs, Tallis will hopefully get his dog-loving itch scratched often enough!

Thank you, Jeff and Patty, for being such great companion volunteers this summer! We hope you do come back.
